Culantro eryngium foetidum of the family Apiaceae (includes carrots, celery, parsley, and parsnip) is a tropical perennial native to South and Central America, grows strongly, regularly around areas inhabited by humans and other animals, and in grassy, open areas.

Culantro, named after it’s strong aroma has been known throughout the ages to treat a number of ailments to include burns, earaches, fevers, hypertension, constipation, fits, asthma, stomachache, worms, infertility complications, snake bites, diarrhea, and malaria.

Known as the stronger version of cilantro (and a distant cousin) and also by the names of spiritweed and fitweed, as it has traditionally been known to treat epilepsy or fits, and to calm the spirit. The technical name of the herb is Eryngium foetidum is also known as E. antihystericum, the second in direct correlation with the clinical treatment of epilepsy.

Asthma and other tension problems as well as high blood sugar and high blood pressure have been resolved and helped by regular consumption of culantro. High in A, B, and C vitamins all of which are powerful antioxidants and help to boost vitality and immunity, and also high in minerals and calcium for the bones.

Leaf Information
Fresh leaves consist of  86–88% moisture, 3.3% protein, 0.6% fat, 6.5% carbohydrate, 1.7% ash, 0.06% phosphorus, and 0.02% iron. Leaves are an excellent source of vitamin A (10,460 I.U./100 g), B2 (60 mg %), B1 (0.8 mg %), and C (150–200 mg %). On a dry weight basis, leaves consist of 0.1–0.95% volatile oil, 27.7% crude fiber, 1.23% calcium, and 25 ppm boron.

The genus Eryngium contains more than 250 flowering species worldwide []. Genus Eryngium is the largest and most complex genus in the Apiaceae family [,].

Because of her reputation as a traditional calming herb, I have worked with her a lot and have learned to appreciate the balancing of the body that comes from having the best culantro regularly in my diet.

Remembering always that the number one optimization and fitness killer is stress, I am quick to find out about the calming and balancing stuff.

Culantro is also a plant that you cannot stop from growing in and around your settlement here in Panama, which is not only convenient but indicative of her intelligence, connectivity, and strength.

The herbs than come in for us when we clear a small bit of land and decide to live there, are part of complete health intelligence, that duplicates itself anytime land is cleared.

Mind you these plants seem to come in regardless of the birds and the bees, dropping them off, in each small clearing. Their reproduction is powerful and consistent.  Perhaps it’s a simple and direct message to the naturally in-tune. [x]

Today livestock benefits mostly from these plants, although there is some mighty nutrition for us there also.

Dandelion is another high calcium, medicinal food in this open-land group, whose bitter taste alone signifies it is a medicine to some.

It goes great with onion, tomato, avocado, and chicken. It goes good with basil oriented, potato or curry dishes also. The balancing effects of culantro regularity are totally noticeable within the first few weeks, I recommend at least one gram per day of consumption.

Coriander or cilantro is the long away cousin of culantro and a sure boast would be to have them both mixed in the guacamole.

I love this best culantro out here because it grows like a weed, has a hard rigid tough-looking plant structure, tough smelling odor, insects barely touch it, and mixes great with chocolate, and vegetable mixes alike.

Culantro is the green staple plant of ‘pico de gallo’ an onion, tomato mix of deep tradition and has been proven through study to be a health cocktail for the already sick as well as a preventative cultural regularity to keep sickness away.

Chive type and a mix of onion types y diced bell peppers would be featured in the king’s version.

If we do anything right here it is eating.

Lets for a moment, take a quick look at the best culantro products.

CULANTRO BENEFITS

Traditionally employed in the treatment of diabetes, rheumatism, several anti-inflammatory, respiratory (cold, asthma, cough, sinusitis), and stomach disorders, the essential oil also portrays high antioxidant ability even to prevent the oxidative degeneration of other foods.  [1,2]

Studies showed evidence that methanol extract of Eryngium foetidum could be a rich source of metabolites with antimicrobial activity to fight Helicobacter pylori (a certain family of digestive tract infections). [3]

In fact, some genus Eryngium species are used as spices and are cultivated throughout the world and other species are used for the treatment of hypertension, gastrointestinal problems, asthma, burns, fevers, diarrhea, malaria, etc. Phytochemical analysis has shown that genus Eryngium species are a rich source of flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and triterpenoids.

Traditional medicine shows several uses for several genera.  At least seven North American tribes specifically mention the use of Eryngium (typically roots) as an anti-snake venom therapy. A recent study concluded that the extract was indeed a functional snake bite medicine. [4]

Among other anti-parasitic functions, the best culantro showed effective against leishmaniasis a common skin parasite infection in the neo-tropical region where it natively grows. [5]

The anticonvulsant properties of an aqueous extract of the Spirit Weed, have been thoroughly examined and tested, in routine treatments for epilepsy.  [6,7,8]

A fraction of the essential oil rich in eryngium is the subject of a US patent application for its effectiveness against parasitic trypanosomes, nematodes, fungi and bacteria in humans and other mammals. These findings suggest the need for further research into this herb and its products. [9]

A diverse amount of wild edible plants is known for the treatment of reproductive errors in Trinidad one of which is our beloved culantro. [10]

CULANTRO SIDE EFFECTS

A 24-week intensive high dose culantro study was done in animal testing finding very little side effects or harm caused by high doses of the plant.

Kidney lesions could form if culantro only was consumed for a long period of time. [11]

CULANTRO EXPERIENCE

Strong grower, easy to get going in pots, and perfect for window sill herb gardens. The heavy odor of the plant and her antiparasitic role makes her pretty much bug resistant.

I would like to get a large area of the species and start to make a very rich tasting and deeply effective agent for mood, and physical health. I have found that this is a great way to expand on foods and species, and there is science behind it. [x]

Traditional medicine sites use of the entire plant, except the seed which should be planted.

She is delicious! Very powerful for energy while working in the field. Bugs leave her alone, and she is strong and procreative.

This specie is hugely popular in the Latin kitchen and to Latin health tradition. The best culantro is totally regarded as a healing substance.

Calm energy is good energy as an athlete this is what you want, and wit the best culantro this is what you get.

Culantro is heavy in iron, riboflavin, calcium, and carotene. It also is an excellent source of vitamin A, B2, B1 and C, powerful antioxidants that support vitality and immunity, including phosphorous for strong bones.

In ancient traditional practice, the leaves and roots are boiled for fevers, chills, vomiting, diarrhea, colds and convulsions, and the water is taken for pneumonia, flu, diabetes, constipation, and malaria fever. The herb is an anti-inflammatory and contains large amounts of plant sterols, so it can aid asthma, arthritis, and swelling. It also contains trimethyl-benzaldehyde, a powerful pain reliever. A tea can soothe earaches, stomachaches and headaches. In some regions, culantro is also known as ‘fit-weed’ because it is said to help prevent or aid epileptic fits.

The United States and other parts of the globe are unfamiliar with culantro for the most part and there is much less written about this herb in English as there is in Spanish.

CULANTRO DISCUSSION

Interestingly culantro is almost non-existent on the Amazon product market. This may only be a shock because where I sit in Panama, it is in every direction naturally.

This lack of products creates an opportunity for a well known, well-tested herb such as this that is so scarce on the market. Surely folks would use this spicy addition should she be available.

Bio-diverse nutritional diet plans for athletes will benefit greatly by regular inclusion.

CULANTRO FAQ

Q. Where is culantro originating from?

A. Culantro is native to Mexico, the Caribbean, Central, and South America, yet is grown worldwide.

Q. What form of culantro plant is it?

A. Culantro is an upright, slender, perennial, evergreen, branched herb that grows about 20-80 cm tall.

Q. What well-known principle uses does culantro have?

A. Culantro has two main uses, namely culinary and medicinal.

Q. What character does culantro exhibit?

A. Eryngium foetidum has a very strong flavor. Culantro and cilantro both belong to the same family and they do not look alike. Cilantro is an annual plant, not a biennial as in culantro.

Q. How does culantro look?

A. The culantro plant possesses a slender, branched taproot. Its stem is grooved, elongating and successively branched at the top into various spreading branches. The plant develops into two types of leaves: basal leaf rosette is 10-16 centimeters long, 3-4 centimeters wide, narrow, with rounded tips, tapered base, and serrate margins, and leaves on the stalks are smaller and tougher. The leaf margin is serrated as well.

Q. When do we harvest culantro?

A. One can harvest culantro when the plant reaches 3 months old.

Q. Does eating culantro control bad breath?

A. Surely. The fresh scent from culantro and high chlorophyll content suggest its deodorizing effect. Parsley is known to be capable of ridding of bad breath and both parsley and culantro belong to the same family of Apiaceae. Generally, just chew on fresh leaves after a meal to get rid of bad breath issues.

Q. What nutrients does a culantro plant constitute?

A. This culantro plant contains riboflavin, iron, carotene, and calcium.

🌿 A New Age of Nutrition Is Here

Most nutritionists don’t know how nutrition is actually cultivated in nature.
They don’t understand ecosystems — they understand isolated compounds.
They don’t build vitality — they prescribe boxes.

Much like modern agriculture, today’s nutrition field is dominated by shortcuts and chemicals. Synthetic vitamins, mass-produced crops, sterile soils, and monoculture mindsets. These systems cheat nature — and nature always pushes back.

The consequences?
Wrecked soil. Broken guts. Fragile immune systems. A sick planet and a sick population.
Not just humans — but animals, microbes, insects, and even fungi are caught in the backlash.

“Who controls the food supply…” Take the Power Back!!

“Who controls the food supply controls the people.” – Henry Kissinger [i]

Imagine If 20% of the Population Took Action Today: A Vision for Nutritional Diversity and Land Restoration

A Future Shaped by Small Alternative Agricultures

Imagine if, starting today, one in five people took up the challenge of cultivating small-scale alternative agriculture—permaculture food forests, regenerative farms, nutrient-dense wild plots, and biodiverse gardens—all designed to support the Nutritional Diversity Diet.

Where would we be in five, ten, or twenty years?

Five Years: The Awakening of the Land

  • Millions of small plots, backyards, and vacant lands transformed into living, breathing ecosystems.
  • Urban and rural landscapes are interwoven with perennial food systems, soil-building crops, and high-density nutrition.
  • Local communities regaining food sovereignty, free from chemical-dependent supply chains.
  • A new generation of eco-entrepreneurs emerges, pioneering micro-farms that thrive on biodiversity, not monoculture.

Ten Years: The Turning Point

  • Soil once depleted by industrial agriculture now teeming with life, enriched by microbial diversity.
  • A shift in global nutrition: Gut health improves, disease rates drop, and food security becomes decentralized.
  • Rivers and oceans heal as synthetic fertilizers and agricultural runoff disappear.
  • AI-driven ecological monitoring and drone-assisted reforestation bring back lost biodiversity.
  • Carbon sequestration skyrockets as trees, fungi, and regenerative landscapes capture atmospheric carbon at scale.

Twenty Years: A Thriving Regenerative Civilization

  • Industrial farming is replaced by hyper-diverse, closed-loop food systems.
  • A self-sustaining, nutritionally complete ecosystem supports human health and planetary stability.
  • No longer a “niche practice,” biodiverse agriculture becomes the foundation of global food production.
  • The climate stabilizes, deserts are reclaimed, and the world breathes in balance with nature.
  • Humanity lives longer, stronger, and more harmoniously, nourished by food systems that heal instead of harm.

Call to Action: The Time Is Now

This is not a distant dream—it is a blueprint for action. With the right support, incentives, and knowledge-sharing networks, we can make this vision a reality.

We propose the Nutritional Diversity Ecological Enhancement Initiative, a scalable, measurable, and globally replicable system to:
✅ Provide tools, education, and guidance to small-scale land stewards.
✅ Establish financial and technological support for high-diversity micro-farms.
✅ Integrate AI, drone technology, and microbial soil innovations for rapid ecosystem regeneration.
✅ Create global food security by focusing on nutrient density over yield quantity.
✅ Develop decentralized marketplaces, ensuring farmers thrive economically while enhancing ecosystems.

We invite partners, visionaries, and world leaders to be part of this movement—to fund, support, and ignite a regenerative revolution.

🌱 The first seeds of change are ready to be planted. Will you be among the first to grow the future?

What Happens When We Take Action?

When 20% of the population actively participates in alternative agriculture and land regeneration, we initiate a chain reaction—one that transforms food systems, ecosystems, human health, and even the global economy.

Phase 1: The Shift Begins (Years 1-5)

  • People reclaim land—from vacant lots to degraded soil, rooftops to backyards—turning them into diverse, regenerative food systems.
  • Microbial restoration kicks in as synthetic inputs are abandoned in favor of probiotic soil amendments, composting, and mycoremediation.
  • Communities reconnect through local food exchanges, cooperative farming models, and educational hubs that teach Nutritional Diversity principles.
  • Corporate agriculture feels the shift—as millions of people begin sourcing food from local, nutrient-dense, chemical-free alternatives.
  • Consumer health improves as gut microbiomes are restored, chronic disease rates decline, and processed food dependency weakens.

Phase 2: The Turning Point (Years 5-10)

  • A new agricultural economy emerges, where small-scale, biodiverse farms outperform industrial monocultures in nutrition, sustainability, and resilience.
  • Desertified lands begin to heal, carbon is pulled from the atmosphere, and regenerative land practices stabilize microclimates.
  • Big agriculture is forced to adapt—industries pivot to regenerative practices or face extinction as decentralized food systems thrive.
  • Nutritional intelligence spreads, with functional medicine and whole-food-based nutrition becoming the global standard.
  • Biodiversity explodes—pollinators, wildlife, and native plants return, forming self-sustaining ecosystems within human environments.

Phase 3: A Regenerative Future (Years 10-20)

  • Human health reaches a new peak, with stronger immune systems, fewer metabolic diseases, and a lifespan extended by decades through nutrient-rich diets.
  • The climate crisis reverses itself, as forests, soil, and mycorrhizal networks become major carbon sinks, cooling the planet naturally.
  • Oceans heal, as agricultural runoff ceases, marine food chains restore, and dead zones shrink.
  • New economic powerhouses emerge, built on regenerative production, decentralized supply chains, and abundance-based commerce.
  • Governments and corporations embrace the movement, integrating nutritional diversity farming and ecosystem repair into global policy.

The Inevitable Future—If We Act Now

This isn’t speculation—this will happen if enough people take action. The first adopters set the stage, and as results multiply, the movement scales exponentially.

The Nutritional Diversity Ecological Enhancement Initiative is designed to facilitate, accelerate, and scale this transformation.

👉 We have the tools. We have the knowledge. We have the opportunity.

🔥 The only question is: How fast do we want this future to arrive?

….. another question could be can we implement through the younger generation and video games!???
