A Gym Killer’s Basic Standard Vocabulary
If you are an experienced gym killer, with years pressing your brains out in several different gyms across nation or globe, you are probably checked out on this introductory guide to gym vocabulary. That is not to say there isn’t something useful for you in this section, especially in respect to getting a full Nutritional Diversity experience.
However if new to the gym or the idea of ‘gym killing,’ and likely lack in some of the terminology, basic principles and gym lingo it would be good to give this a once over, before reading advanced gym instructional material.
A ‘Gym Killer‘ in modern day gym lingo is defined generally as someone who does their thing, hard, in the gym. I have a more specific definition. Optimal fitness ability balanced through the categories of strength, stamina, dexterity, mental, and flexibility.
Gym Vocabulary
Here are some of terms, you are likely to hear bouncing around the weight room floor.
Set = One repetitive set of dedicated exercise repetitions of the same form and type. For Example : I am doing three sets with 30 second rest breaks in between of 10 repetitions (or reps) on flat bench using 225lbs.
Rep = One repetition of any given exercise, usually within a set of repetitions or reps. For Example : Today I think you should do less reps and heavier weight in your sets and build a good layer of muscle back up it looks like. ‘High rep’ usually indicates less weight, and more reps. Ten reps has been gym set standard workout weight, for safe but hard resistance’ and 5 rep weight is ‘low rep’ muscle tearing / building weight, that you need to work up to starting with your warm up.
Pyramids = Going from high rep to low rep heavier weight, back to high rep lighter weight. This is an excellent strength and muscle building technique most would still consider a basic principle yet yields heavy results in practice. For Example: Most people do three sets as a minimum of a particular workout, they will do a lighter high rep set first then up the weight, then go for gold on the third with their heavy lower rep set. Pyramids are simply stepping it back down with two or three more sets. My pyramids in the gym are super set pyramids, with 6 steps up and six steps down, because I feel the extra steps, really fill in the spectrum of strength and support in a fuller more capable manner in the end.
Super Set = Working different muscle groups quickly one after the other, such as chest and thighs, one resting while the other working, usually with less rest in between sets. Most of the year all my gym sessions are super setting the whole time. Super setting means to do a set of one muscle group immediately followed by another. Super Setting is a mega throttle programing mode, that I take to a whole new level, but studies have shown for years that using this training method of using different muscle groups, the body can carry a higher endorphin level as more of a constant, throughout the session. With super setting especially incorporating a serious breathing mantra, and four or five muscle groups, into my rhythm.
Just drawing out my pyramids with more sets and doing complex super-setting, after the right kind of gym warm up, is enough to multiply my results that a traditional 3 set routine would do for me. Some of my best days are the ones where I have some extra time and show up at 5 am where I own the gym, and can do plenty of super setting using multiple pieces of equipment.
Burn Outs = Burnouts are when right after doing a set, the gym practitioner drops the weight does another set, drops the weight, and does another and so on until the muscle is burned out and can do no more. Calisthenic burnouts are popular where immediately following the set the calisthenic exercise for that muscle group would be rep-ed out until muscle failure. For Example : After his bench set he dropped and did x#of push-ups till burn out, or with dumbbell curls did 4 reps her hand with 60 lbs, 4 more with 40 pound dumbbells immediately after, and as many as can be done with 30 lbs until muscle failure. Burnouts are usually not performed more than once a week and many plans I see call for them once every5-6weeks.
Multi-set =Multi set is working the same muscle group, with little to no rest, doing different exercises one after the other in one set. For Example: I am going to do ten reps of inclined dumbbell bench immediately followed by ten reps of declined bench nautilus machine, immediately followed by ten cable fly’s in an insane chest multiset.
Max = This is the maximum weight that you can use doing one rep. This requires a serious warm up to prevent injury. For Example : Whats your max on squats? For me right now it’s 540lbs on a standing free weight squat, that is the maximum I will use at this time.
Super Groove, or Zone : A state of being where top performance is what is happening. For Example : “That guy is in his groove, he is in his zone, he is killing it.”
Maxing and Burnouts are usually performed once every 6 weeks, to break plateaus, and shock the weight trained and conditioned muscle to become even stronger.
Fasting = not eating.
Week Off = Just as important as week on or weeks on are, a week off is very important. Most pro athletes and trainers consider a full rest and recovery, a two week off period.
Peak Week = Depending on athletic game rhythm, such as a football games schedule, or a boxers fight night, a soldier’s recon missions and down-times rest and training overall, wants to orient in support of the most powerful possible performance at game time or peak week. Navy Seals train to stay up moving and fighting for a week at a time, where as a boxer twelve rounds, a foot ball player a few hours in their day but that day comes once a week, etc.
